C'est par ce modèle que tout à commencé, dans l'immédiat après-guerre. SAAB, un important constructeur d'avions, cherchait à se reconvertir dans une activité de pointe : la première automobile SAAB devait être d'avant-garde. Aérodynamique soignée, traction avant, qualité de fabrication furent dès le départ les principes retenus, toujours en vigueur aujourd'hui.
Le moteur 2 cylindres 2 temps, inspiré de la mécanique DKW, céda la place à un moteur V4 Ford au cours des années 60. La série 92 à 96 se tailla un beau palmarès dans les rallyes internationaux. Ce modèle, d'une longévité exceptionnelle, dura jusqu'à l'orée des années 80.
