Comme la série 2 juste avant elle... et la série 6 il y a beaucoup plus longtemps encore, BMW attribue les numéros pairs aux coupés et cabriolets (sans oublier les "gran coupés") dérivés des berlines et touring héritant du numéro impair immédiatement inférieur. La série 4 offre une carrosserie fluide totalement différente de celle de la série 3, même si l'air de famille est présent. Les motorisations suivent l'évolution malheureuse du "downsizing" avec une majorité de 4 cylindres au programme.
